Heal and grow together
The stress of life impacts every area of our lives, but possibly the most difficult is with our partner. Conflict and disconnection in your relationship can leave you wondering, “Why is it so hard to feel happy? To feel like you matter? To feel loved?
Tension in a romantic relationship can be very lonely. Therapy can help you understand, support and reconnect in your relationship.
Feel like you have a partner again. Visit us for couples therapy in Truckee & South Lake Tahoe.
Through Emotionally Focused Therapy, we work together to understand what’s causing tension, and delve beneath the surface of your issues. We’ll help you gain insight into what’s really going on, remember what drew you to your partner in the first place, and improve your communication.
Couples therapy helps open the lines of communication between you and your partner, with the support of an experienced therapist guiding you along the way.
Whether you are experiencing an unexpected trauma in your relationship, or you simply want to learn how to communicate and work as a team more effectively, this dynamic can be very effective in helping you connect with your partner like never before.
Communication is the lifeblood of any relationship. When it breaks down, misunderstandings occur, feelings get hurt, and resentment can build. You may struggle to express your needs, fears, and desires effectively, leading to feeling much too isolated in a relationship that should feel comforting and loving. In therapy, we work on improving your communication skills so you can better understand each other’s needs.
When trust is damaged, it can be hard to rebuild. Trust issues often stem from past betrayals, dishonesty, or broken promises, leading to a constant state of doubt and insecurity. In therapy, we focus on understanding the root of these trust issues, rebuilding trust, and creating an environment of honesty and transparency.
Infidelity, whether emotional or physical, deeply hurts and often shatters your trust and your heart. It’s not just about the act itself but also the secrecy, deception, and betrayal of trust that comes with it. Therapy can provide a safe, neutral space to process your feelings, understand why the infidelity occurred, and determine the steps needed to heal and possibly rebuild the relationship.
Money-related issues are one of the top sources of conflict in relationships. Differences in spending habits, income disparities, financial goals, or decisions about major purchases can lead to secrecy, tension and disagreements. In therapy, we work on strategies to discuss finances openly, make decisions together, and find common ground so you can manage your finances as a team.
Intimacy is more than just physical closeness; it’s also about emotional connection. Issues with intimacy can stem from a lack of communication, emotional disconnection, or unresolved conflicts. Couples therapy can help in understanding and addressing the barriers to intimacy, helping you and your partner discover a deeper emotional and physical closeness.
As the busyness of life takes more time, both partners may start feeling unnoticed or undervalued, leading to feelings of loneliness and resentment. Helping your partner feel seen and validated is an important part to strengthening any relationship. In therapy, we focus on rediscovering each other’s worth, showing your partner your appreciation, and fostering a mutual understanding and respect.
We learn about you and your story to help identify the barriers and past events that are keeping you and your partner from moving forward.
We work with you to understand the underlying emotions that perpetuate the cycle of disconnection and loneliness. We provide the tools and strategies to reconnect.
We assess your progress often throughout your journey and make the adjustments we need so you can heal and reconnect with your partner.
While we can’t give a specific timeline of success, most clients feel some relief in 4-6 sessions as we better understand your specific cycle. To see positive results faster, we recommend working through the book, “Hold Me Tight: Seven Conversations for a Lifetime of Love.”
With time and consistency, you may experience improvements such as:
Yes! We work as a team to better understand your cycle and what happens for each of you under the surface. Occasionally we will also meet with one of you at a time to take a deeper dive into your attachment history and anything you are not sure how to process with your partner.
Yes, in most cases! We will help you determine what your benefits are and if couples’ therapy is covered before your first session.
All of our therapists are supervised and supported by our clinical director. We use Emotionally Focused Therapy and CBT separately or in combination during couples therapy. Our clinical director is certified in EFT by the International Center for Excellence on Emotionally Focused Therapy. Our team meets twice weekly for continued training and case consultation.
You don’t need to be in a crisis situation to attend therapy. In fact, regularly attending therapy early on can help avoid potential crisis altogether. It can benefit anyone in a committed relationship, including dating, engaged, or cohabiting couples.
Some couples find couples therapy helpful in navigating life transitions, such as new parenthood, big career changes, or health issues. Think of it as preventative maintenance for your relationship.
The duration of couples therapy can vary widely depending on the nature and severity of the issues you’re facing, your willingness to change, and how quickly you make progress. On average, couples attend therapy for several months, but it can be shorter or longer. Most couples start to notice some improvements in their relationship within 4-6 sessions.
The ultimate goal is not speed, but lasting change and improvement in your relationship.
If you find yourself consistently unhappy, stuck in a cycle of conflict, or feeling disconnected from your partner, couples therapy might be beneficial. Other signs include difficulty communicating, a significant breach of trust, conflicts about major life decisions, or if you are considering separation. However, even if you’re not experiencing a severe issue, couples therapy can be beneficial for improving communication, deepening your understanding of each other, and fostering a stronger connection.
In a typical session, you and your partner will meet with the therapist together. Initially, the therapist will gather information about your relationship history, the issues you’re facing, and your goals for therapy. Our next sessions will involve discussions and exercises designed to help you understand each other better, improve your communication, resolve conflicts, and rebuild your connection. The therapy process is collaborative, and the more involved and willing you are towards growth, the faster you will see results.
